At the Diocesan Museum in Milan, an exhibition dedicated to Previati on the Passion of Christ

A nucleus of works by Gaetano Previati on the theme of the Passion of Christ is on display at the Diocesan Museum in Milan.

A nucleus of sacred works by Italian pointillism exponent Gaetano Previati (1852-1920) is on display until May 20, 2018 at the Chiostri di San’Eustorgio at the Museo Diocesano in Milan.

The theme of the exhibition is the Passion of Christ: the exhibition opens with The Road to Calvary. The work was recently acquired by the Museo Diocesano and has not yet been exhibited to the public, flanked by another autograph version of the same subject from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona.

Also on display are the entire sequence of the fourteen Stations of the Cross made by the artist between 1901 and 1902 from the Vatican Museums; alongside are photographic reproductions retouched with silver point by Previati himself, preserved in the church of SS. Quirico and Paolo in Dogliani (CN).

The large canvases of the Way of the Cross present the theme of pain and the Passion of Christ through the imposing figure of Christ and the chromatic rhythm: starting with brighter images and arriving at the last image, completely dark, in which the tragedy is fulfilled.

The retrospective is curated by Nadia Righi and Micol Forti and is organized in collaboration with the Vatican Museums.
