The Museum of Rome in Trastevere presents a photographic exhibition on landscapes and communities in celebration. The survey highlights the relationships between humans and the natural environment, emphasizing the value of celebration as a shared expression of community.

From September 19, 2025 to March 1, 2026, the Museo di Roma in Trastevere presents the photographic exhibition Intangible Ties. Twenty-eight festive landscapes on display, the result of the visual documentation project promoted by theCentral Institute for Intangible Heritage of the Ministry of Culture. The initiative, winner of the public call for proposals Strategia Fotografia 2022, designed to support research and enhance the talents of Italian photography, is among the institutional activities of the Ministry of Culture’s General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity.

The exhibition is organized by the Central Institute for Intangible Heritage, and promoted by Roma Capitale, Department of Culture and the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage.

The twenty-eight photo reportages, now part of an important Photographic Fund on Italian culture kept at the Ministry of Culture’s Intangible Heritage Institute, were taken in different regions of Italy by Marina Berardi, Barbara Di Maio, Francesco Faraci, Francesco Francaviglia and Fausto Podavini.

The project aims to protect, safeguard and enhance intangible heritage through photography, proposing new keys to interpreting the festival as a relevant aspect of today’s society. The investigation highlights the relationships between human beings and the natural environment, emphasizing the value of celebration as a shared expression of community.

Francesco Francaviglia rereads the nude race in Lentini 55 years after Ferdinando Scianna’s famous reportage, crossing the boundaries of social photography; Barbara Di Maio explores the Mysteries of Campobasso with a heterotopic approach to the religious feast; Marina Berardi proposes new perspectives of analysis with the virtual landscapes of Lucca Comics & Games; Francesco Faraci recounts the protest landscapes of the children of Brancaccio in Palermo; Fausto Podavini restores through images the May of Accetura.

The curatorship is by Fabio Fichera and Cinzia Marchesini, with a research team led by Leandro Ventura and composed of Stefania Baldinotti, Paola Bertoncini, Francesco Paolo Quaranta, Omerita Ranalli and Claudio Rizzoni, while the visual communication is by Maria Donata Bologna.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog of anthropological images and reflections, presented during one of the scheduled events on the calendar. The exhibition is not limited to photography alone: the program includes meetings and study days curated by the Central Institute for Intangible Heritage, moments of discussion with the communities organizing the festivals and opportunities for shared reflection. The project, which is constantly evolving, takes the form of a collaborative process between communities, anthropologists, scholars and photographers, with the aim of expanding research and proposing new looks at experimentation.
