From October 24, 2020 to January 31, 2021, the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi (Turin) will host the exhibition Andy Warhol. Super Pop, a journey through the life of Andy Warhol that brings together seventy works, including photographs, silkscreens, lithographs, prints, acetates, and faithful reconstructions of the environments and products that Warhol loved and from which he drew inspiration. The exhibition opens by evoking the atmosphere of the 1950s and 1960s, and then immerses visitors in Warhol’s history, from advertising graphic designer to successful artist, being able to admire his best-known works such as the portrait of Marylin Monroe, the famous self-portrait, the Cow cow and the iconic Campbell’s soup.

Also part of the itinerary are the acetates and silkscreen plates from which his prints came to life, and an exhibition of the collection of shots by U.S. photographer Fred W. McDarrah, who immortalized the artist for more than 30 years, revealing on the one hand his more intimate and human side and on the other highlighting his many different artistic practices. Warhol is thus portrayed at the height of his career surrounded by Brillo boxes during the opening of one of his solo shows, or while shooting one of his experimental films, or again, many years later, intent on one of his favorite activities: a phone call.

Also featured in the exhibition is a replica of the work Silver Clouds, an installation composed of balloons floating in midair and encircling the visitor, first created in 1966 at Leo Castelli Gallery, where McDarrah documented the process of installation. There will be no shortage of the communicative Andy, histrionic in company, in America’s best trendy clubs, as well as the absolute host of the Factory, that is, the “factory” where Warhol produced most of his work, but also his headquarters, the gathering and sharing place where all his friends gathered to share fantasies, passions and ideas, amid transgressive avant-garde parties. It is the space where Pop Art becomes a way of life and at its base is the acceptance of any behavior, without judgment. Among actors, drag queens, socialites and free thinkers, artists such as Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Truman Capote and Mick Jagger also passed through Warhol’s court. At the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, the studio atmosphere will be recreated and an exact copy of the historic red sofa from la Factory will be on display. Photographer Anton Perich’s shots of visitors to the Factory and Keith Haring ’s testimonies to Basquiat, who welcomed the master’s legacy, will close the itinerary.

The exhibition, organized by Next Exhibition and Ono Arte under the patronage of Metropolitan City of Turin, opens Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (last entry one hour before closing).
