Bologna dedicates an exhibition to Pier Paolo Pasolini on the centenary of his birth

From March 1 to October 16, 2022, Bologna will pay homage to one of its most illustrious sons, Pier Paolo Pasolini, to whom the exhibition "Pier Paolo Pasolini. Figurative Folgurations," scheduled in the new exhibition spaces of the Sottopasso in Piazza Re Enzo.

On March 5, 1922, the great Pier Paolo Pasolini was born in Bologna, and his hometown, in tribute to him, is dedicating an exhibition entitled Pier Paolo Pasolini. Figurative Folgurations, scheduled from March 1 to Oct. 16, 2022 in the Sottopasso di Piazza Re Enzo. The exhibition, curated by Marco Antonio Bazzocchi, Roberto Chiesi, and Gian Luca Farinelli, is part of the program of PPP 100 years of Pasolini in Bologna, the rich calendar of events of the Municipality and the Cineteca di Bologna that also includes a conference, a film retrospective, and the distribution throughout Italy of some of his films. The exhibition is also an opportunity to inaugurate the new exhibition spaces in the Sottopasso di Piazza Re Enzo.

Pier Paolo Pasolini. Figurative Folgurations is the result of a long process of study, comparison and in-depth analysis that is materialized in an exhibition project that promises to be rich in cultural references. With the aim of reconstructing the genesis of Pasolini’s gaze, the exhibition starts from his formative years in Bologna, which took place under the aegis of a master such as Roberto Longhi, and documents the shaping and evolution of his creative universe, from his beginnings in 1961 with Accattone to Salò e le 120 giornate di Sodoma, released posthumously just a few weeks after his murder on November 2, 1975.

From the analysis of the multiple shots that made these masterpieces famous, a ramification of cross-references and references flourishes, reconstructed in a painstaking manner, in turn compared with the texts written about them. The exhibition aspires to compose an overview of Pasolini’s entire oeuvre read through a lens of precision, capable of highlighting his thought and imagery, and recounting them through images. Pier Paolo Pasolini. Figurative Folgurations aims to hold together heterogeneous materials and connections in a chronologically organized path.

Paintings, first editions, artist’s photographs, audiovisual material taken from films and interviews dialogue with the aim of bringing out the rich articulation of Pasolini’s imagery and making, his ravenous gaze, capable of encompassing the most disparate stimuli, reconstructed and delivered to the public as a renewed key to interpreting his work. Accompanying the exhibition is a publication with the same title, Pier Paolo Pasolini. Figurative Folgurations, and a second that recounts his relationship with the city, Pasolini and Bologna.

The program also includes the Pasolini in Bologna conference to be held on March 3, 2022 at the Stabat Mater dell’Archiginnasio, a full retrospective of his films at the Cinema Lumière in Bologna between March and April 2022, and the nationwide distribution of some of his most representative titles, thanks to the Il Cinema Ritrovato project. At the Movies realized in collaboration with CSC - Cineteca Nazionale, with which the Cineteca has been bringing restored classics to Italian theaters for a decade.
