Daniel Steegmann Mangrané is on display at the Pirelli HangarBicocca

The work of Daniel Steegmann Mangrané (Barcelona, 1977) questions the relationship between culture and nature. The artist’s interest in biology has led him to investigate complex ecological systems and introduce the natural world within his works. Numerous in his practice are references to the rainforest of the country where the artist lives and works, Brazil (such as branches, leaves, and insects). These references, combined with geometric shapes and abstract patterns, open up reflections on the complex dynamics between the elements that surround us.

His first exhibition in Italy, entitled A Leaf-Shaped Animal Draws The Hand, curated by Lucia Aspesi and Fiammetta Griccioli and on view from Sept. 12, 2019 to Jan. 19, 2020 at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan, will feature more than 20 works made from 1998 to the present, ranging from films, virtual reality settings, 2D holograms, sculptures and installations. The artist will place the physical and sensory dimension of the viewer at the center of the exhibition project, offering new visions on the entire body of his works, placed in dialogue with each other.

The exhibition itinerary will be characterized by alternating material experiences with immaterial situations, through a site-specific installation made of transparent white fabric partitions that will redefine the industrial character of Pirelli HangarBicocca, welcoming and revealing the works on display. Like floating membranes, these elements will divide the space into different areas while allowing, with their transparency, an immediate overview of the entire exhibition.

Some of the most important institutions of international importance have hosted his solo exhibitions, such as IAC - Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne; Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham (2019); CCS Bard College, New York, Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona, CAC, Vilnius (2018); Fundação de Serralves, Porto (2017); Medellín Museum of Modern Art, Antioquia, The Green Parrot, Barcelona (2016); Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Casa Modernista, São Paulo (2015); CRAC Alsace Centre Rhénan d’Art Contemporain, Altkirch (2014); Casa França Brasil, Rio de Janeiro (2013). His work has also been shown in numerous group exhibitions, at, for example, Centre Pompidou-Metz, Metz, 14th Biennale de Lyon (2017); 9th Berlin Biennale (2016); New Museum Triennial, New York, Kadist Art Foundation, Paris (2015); 9th Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre (2013); 30th São Paulo Biennial (2012).
