Gian Maria Tosatti on display in Bergamo with drawings from the Italian Pavilion

Gian Maria Tosatti is exhibiting his drawings, including sketches for the Italian Pavilion, in the solo exhibition "Some Notes. Drawings 2005-2021," from June 10 to July 9 at The Drawing Hall in Grassobbio (Bergamo).

Italy’s most talked-about artist of the moment, Gian Maria Tosatti, is the protagonist of an exhibition showcasing his drawings, including sketches for the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2022, from June 10 to July 9, 2022, held at The Drawing Hall space in Grassobbio (Bergamo). The solo exhibition, curated by Andrea Mastrovito, is entitled Some Notes. Drawings 2005-2021.

At the basis of the exhibition project, as is always the case with exhibitions at The Drawing Hall, the concept of drawing emerges as the foundation of the artist’s production. For the first time, Tosatti is exhibiting to the public a series of drawings made over the years: the exhibition delves into his intimate and unexpected relationship with the practice of drawing that underlies the design of his artistic production. The exhibition is accompanied by a documentary produced by Yanzi srl entitled Ho chiesto alla polvere (I asked the dust), in which director Marco Marcassoli highlights the relationship between drawing and the large-scale environmental installations that distinguish the artist’s research. The documentary will be screened in collaboration with Lab 80 film at “Lo Schermo Bianco” on June 11 at 5 p.m. immediately after a public meeting with Gian Maria Tosatti.

Some Notes. Drawings 2005-2021 aims to emphasize how for Gian Maria Tosatti the drawing, which usually does not represent a completed work in his research, is a first, fundamental preparatory design step to an installation work. The choice falls on a series of preparatory drawings, shown in the exhibition and also studied in the Notebook, the publication edited for each of the events of The Drawing Hall. Among the works on offer are drawings related to the artist’s most important cycles, from Devotions (2005-2011) to Foundations (2010-2016), the production Seven Seasons of the Spirit (2013-2016) linked to the city of Naples and later exhibited at the Madre Museum, and some preparatory sketches for Storia della Notte and Destino delle Comete, the work recently inaugurated at the Italian Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale. Supplementing them, there are also some preparatory sketches for works on a smaller scale.

The Notebook includes a text by Andrea Mastrovito and a contribution by Tosatti himself from Manabile per Giovani Artisti, the book that marked the first collaboration between the two artists in 2013. For information you can visit The Drawing Hall website.
