In Rome Van Gogh and Monet in virtual reality to experience a typical day in the shoes of the two artists

Virtual Art Van Gogh + Monet Experience is the title of a multimedia show organized in Rome at the Ex-caserme Guido Reni from October 9, 2019 to January 6, 2020. The experience is intended to take the form of a journey through time to discover Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet to “live” the places that inspired the two great artists. Thanks to VR technology, visitors will be immersed 360 degrees in the landscapes, colors, and atmospheres at the time of Arles and Giverny, as if they were living inside the painting.

The experience, for the first time in Rome, is totalizing: the visitor is guided on a path through the works that aims at emotional involvement through impressions, sounds, colors. The event, produced and distributed internationally by Next Exhibition, consists of four moments.

As the first scenario, the visitor displays reproductions of Claude Monet’s main paintings : thevisitor can immortalize himself or be immortalized in a strongly evocative scenario, before entering the “mind” of the Master. With the support of theoculus rift, the latest generation tool for the virtual world, the audience will experience the virtual journey and the story of the scenarios that inspired Monet’s art. This is where the second moment of this exhibition begins, with the artist’s works: from the vibrant red color of The Poppies to the yellow of The Haystacks, from the snowy landscape of The Magpie to the flicker of the Thames water of Parliament at sunset. And again, the glimpses of Bordighera and the light touch of The Water Lilies to the station, a recurring theme in the artist’s paintings. All of which will allow visitors to experience a “day” in Monet’s shoes.

Leaving the virtual experience, and passing by the bridge of flowers that evokes the Garden at Giverny, one arrives at the third moment of this journey, dedicated to Vincent Van Gogh. The third scenario includes reproductions of Van Gogh’s main paintings, approaching his personality and the different stages of his existence. From early depictions of peasant and poorer class painting to the Paris period, when he encountered the works of the Impressionists and Monet and was disappointed. Then again the Arles period with the love/hate relationship with Gauguin, to the isolation in Saint-Remy-de-Provance. Finally, the arrival in Auvers-Sur-Oise until the artist’s end. An exhibition area where we begin to sense the torment of the van Gogh genius, thanks in part to quotations from letters he wrote to his brother Theo.

Leaving the room, one encounters the second virtual phase, the fourth moment of the exhibition. Wearing the oculus rift here, too, the visitor sees and feels as van Gogh does, experiencing in a multisensory way a typical day of the artist: from sunrise to sunset in the painter’s body in the village of Arles, France. The immersive walk is complete, 360 degrees, and revolves around a succession of seven of Van Gogh’s works.

From waking up in the bedroom(Van Gogh’s Bedroom), walking up the stairs, discovering the house from the outside(The White House), advancing into the fields with an encounter with peasant women(The Siesta), arriving in the Wheatfield with Crows, and then A Wheatfield with Cypresses where a speed effect indicates that the end of the day is coming and the transition to The Starry Night begins, before the day finally ends with the night painting on the waterfront(Starry Night on the Rhone) and the return to the bedroom (Van Gogh’s Bedroom). On each new scene, visitors perceive the environment through the artist’s eyes, and when they are at a close distance, their hands begin to paint the landscape that becomes the work, with mention of the title and year of creation.

The tour ends with the educational and interactive area where, thanks to explanatory tutorials, young and old can try their hand at the styles of van Gogh and Monet, starting with the use of black and white shading and then moving on to color.

Hours: Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday and holidays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Last admission allowed to the exhibition one hour before closing time.

Ticket price: Open €18.50, Full €16.50, Reduced €14.50. Children under 3 years old do not pay.
