Inclusion between art and fashion, Daniel Lismore's exhibition at the Palace of Arts in Naples

" Inclusion," or, Inclusion between art and fashion. This is the title of the exhibition that, from July 1 to August 1, 2019 at PAN - Palazzo delle Arti in Naples, makes the protagonists are the ideas in motion of the students of theIUAD Academy of Fashion in Naples, who precisely from inclusion (a theme converging to the poetics of the English artist Daniel Lismore) have drawn inspiration. The exhibition project, curated by Nunzia Garoffolo, develops in a path in which the works of the students of the Academy intertwine and dialogue with those of the English artist Daniel Lismore, for the first time in Italy with a solo exhibition.

A work, but also a life project, that of Lismore, which can be summed up in the admonition Be yourself, everyone else is already taken, a categorical imperative that invites one to be oneself, celebrates the individual, the freedom to be, think and live, autonomously and consciously tracing one’s own life path. The exhibition itinerary is emphasized by olfactory installations embellished with fragrances created by the artist himself, of which his self-portraits are the absolute protagonists, conceived as true three-dimensional sculptures in real size, a concretization of the Wagnerian Gesamkunstwerk, that is, the total work of art in which several channels of communication dialogue with each other. Accompanying the proceedings are musical compositions created especially for the artist by renowned Icelandic artist EINAR ORN.

The sculptures and his theatrical clothing assemblages that adorn them, combining pieces of haute couture, vintage and precious fabrics, trace an anthropology that speaks of the self, the unconscious, identity, soliciting and encouraging reflection on the ’individual, understood as an individual, and at the same time on humanity in its vital and colorful multiformity. A dialectic that is the result of the artist’s personal research and life experiences, which makes use of “tra-dressing” (i.e., going beyond dressing) as a metaphor and a warning of ’acting, that is, pushing beyond the material element of the self and life itself to grasp the immaterial, the values of humanity in its fullness, thwarting the dichotomy between reality and appearance.

Daniel Lismore is a British artist who resides in London. He studied photography before becoming a model and has been portrayed by the world’s most renowned photographers such as Mario Testino, David LaChapelle and Ellen von Unwerth, as well as having a background as a stylist and fashion designer. Lismore is famous for his outfits that brilliantly combine haute couture garments with items found in charity-shop finds, tons of vintage and tartan fabrics, plastic trinkets, lost and found, bows, feathers, crushes, shells, ethnic jewelry, retro accessories, hats and more in an expression of eccentric creative energy and his unique sartorial point of view.

He published his first book Be yourself, Everyone else is Already Taken, presented in prestigious venues such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, which encompasses the thirty-two three-dimensional sculptures featured in his first museum exhibition in the United States of ’America.

In 2016, the artist became an ambassador for the “Circuit program” at the Tate Museum, which hosted his first two exhibitions. He was also featured as part of the Venice Biennale in Extraterrestrial Odyssey, curated by Paolo De Grandis, Magdalena Gabriel, Tamara Li / The International Association of Art Critics affiliated withUNESCO and organized by M17 Contemporary Art Center, whose opening was held at Palazzo Pisani on May 12, 2017. There the artist flanked with alien guardians, two of her new futuristic sculptures, Lina Condes. His human-sized sculptures inspired by Condes’ work are made through the use of new three-dimensional scanning technologies to create versions of himself from the future or perhaps another world. He is an ambassador for the climate change charity Cool Earth working as a Media Manager Social closely with Vivienne Westwood on her climate revolution projects and social activism activities in general. He also serves as a representative of the Tate Museum, which hosted his first two exhibitions in 2012 and 2013. In June 2018 Daniel Lismore was featured in a solo exhibition in Iceland, held in Reykjavik as part of the Reykjavik Arts Festival. In April 2019 he gave a talk during the TED Talks in Vancouver at a press conference entitled Be Yourself in which he spoke for the first time about the art of living sculpture. He will also be the costume designer for the show The Mask of Orpheus that will be performed at the English National Opera in London from October 18 to November 13.
