London: Van Gogh and Britain on exhibition in 2019

London's Tate Britain has announced a major van Gogh exhibition in 2019. It will delve into the relationship between van Gogh and Britain.

London’s Tate Britain is planning a new exhibition dedicated to Vincent Van Gogh for spring 2019, the first dedicated to the artist’s relationship with Britain. Van Gogh, in fact, arrived in the English capital at the age of 20 and became so enamored with it that, as the Guardian recalls, in January 1874 he wrote to his brother Theo these words, “Things are going well for me here, I have a wonderful home and it is a great pleasure for me to observe London and the English way of life, and the English themselves.”

The exhibition will tell the story of how London prompted Van Gogh to explore new ways of making art, but also of living and of his relationship with the art of painters such as John Constable and John Everett Millais.

For the occasion, Tate Britain will exhibit more than 40 works, including masterpieces such as "Starry Night on the Rhone," the"Self-Portrait with Felt Hat," the “Shoes” on loan from the Amsterdam Museum, and one of the celebrated “Sunflowers,” on loan from the National Gallery.
The exhibition will also showcase works by British artists who were influenced by the Dutch painter such as Christopher Wood, David Bomberg and Francis Bacon.

“His stay in Britain changed his view of the world and of himself,” said Alex Farquharson, director of Tate Britain, “encouraging him to become an artist. This is an exciting opportunity for us to reveal the impact Britain had on Van Gogh and the enormous influence he had on British artists.”

The exhibition will be open between March 27 and August 11, 2019.
