Major exhibition on the image of women in Venice in the 16th century at the Palazzo Reale in Milan

From February 23 to June 5, 2022, Palazzo Reale in Milan is dedicating a major exhibition to the leading Venetian artists of the 16th century who depicted female beauty.

Palazzo Reale in Milan presents the exhibition Titian and the Image of Woman curated by Sylvia Ferino from February 23 to June 5, 2022. Promoted by Comune di Milano Cultura and Palazzo Reale in collaboration with the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the exhibition is a large group show dedicated to the main Venetian artists of the 16th century who depicted female beauty.

Indeed, the female image in Venice in the 16th century acquired an importance probably never before seen in the history of painting thanks to the presence in the lagoon of Titian and other artists, but also thanks to the status that women of that time enjoyed in Venetian society.

Divided into eight sections, the exhibition will include about one hundred works, including paintings, sculptures, applied art objects, books and graphics. Titian’s paintings will include the Portrait of Isabella d’Este, Mars, Venus and Cupid, Tarquinio and Lucretia from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Portrait of a Young Woman from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Portrait of Eleonora Gonzaga della Rovere from the Uffizi, and the Allegory of Wisdom from the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice. In addition to Titian, works by Tintoretto, Veronese, Palma the Elder, and Giorgione will be on display.

Portraits of “Venetian beauties,” deities of mythology, allegories, saints and heroines, not forgetting references to the literary world.
