Paul Klee and his primitivism coming to Milan's MUDEC

From October 31, 2018 to March 3, 2019, the exhibition Paul Klee. At the Origins of Art.

On October 31 , 2018, the exhibition"Paul Klee. At the Origins of Art," which will be on view until March 3, 2019.

Awide selection of the artist’s works, about one hundred, will lead the visitor through the theme of primitivism: the interest in everything that is, in the artistic sphere, wild and primitive was born in Paul Klee during his first trip to Italy and with the consequent discovery ofearly Christian art in Rome, between 1901 and 1902.
For him, the origin of art coincides with an experience that allows the artist to distance himself from everyday life and to consider human affairs as through a telescope: in primitivism andchildren’s art he sees as yet unexplored places that contain an original and innovative style.

Present in the exhibition will be works, from important European museums and private collections, abstract and polychrome as well as his lesser-known caricature works. In addition, visitors will be accompanied by valuable ethnographic artifacts from MUDEC and historical texts. The exhibition layout, which follows a thematic sequence, is built according to an alternation of light and dark and diffused light: a tribute to Carlo Scarpa ’s design for the exhibition dedicated to Paul Klee at the 1948 Venice Biennale.

The exhibition will be divided into five sections: from caricature to the period when the artist called himself a cosmic illustrator, epigraphic-type primitivism, non-European art and the art of childhood, and a reinvention of the puppet theater Klee had built for his son Felix; finally, a section devoted to polychromes and abstraction.

Also on display are works never seen in Italy, such as"Nomadic Artist - Manifesto" from 1940, a manifesto of the artist’s condition, and the painting"Artificial Rock" from 1927.

The exhibition is curated by Michele Dantini and Raffaella Resch and is sponsored by the City of Milan-Cultura and 24 Ore Cultura-Gruppo 24 Ore, in collaboration with the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern.
