Photography between art and passion. An exhibition dedicated to Marcello Dudovich in Chiasso.

From Sept. 29, 2019 to Feb. 16, 2020, the m.a.x. in Chiasso pays tribute to Marcello Dudovich, among the most significant exponents of 20th-century advertising graphics.

Opening today at the m.a.x. museum in Chiasso is the exhibition Marcello Dudovich (1878-1962). Photography between Art and Passion, open to the public until Feb. 16, 2020.

Curated by Roberto Curci and Nicoletta Ossanna Cavadini, the exhibition aims to analyze the relationship between photography and poster art in the art of Marcello Dudovich, who during the 20th century devoted himself to advertising graphics.

On display are more than 300 works, including unpublished vintage photographs, original posters, sketches and drafts, as well as magazines of theperiod, letters, postcards and documents, from important public and private collections, such as the Museo Nazionale Collezione Salce in Treviso, the Civica Raccolta delle stampe Achille Bertarelli of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, the Gabinetto dei disegni of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, the Civico Archivio fotografico in Milan, the Civico Museo Revoltella - Galleria d’Arte moderna in Trieste, and the Galleria Campari in Sesto San Giovanni.

Dudovich is placed in comparison with Leopoldo Metlicovitz, whose twenty unpublished photographs from the Civic Photographic Archive of Milan are exhibited.

Beginning with some of the artist’s youthful shots, it is understood how photography was a source of inspiration for the creation of illustrations; next, the interwar period is analyzed, in which Dudovich reached the peak of his career, including from an entrepreneurial point of view.

Among the subjects he drew inspiration for his posters were life in the fields and the female universe: from the former he developed a series of sketches and posters of livestock shows, while, for the theme of women, famous actresses served as models, thus representing cinema, theater, operetta, variety shows, and music.

His use of photography was invaluable for his work inpublishing, such as those he executed for Munich’s Simplicissimus, for La Lettura, for Ars et Labor, for the Secolo XX, and for La Donna, major Italian cultural magazines of the early 20th century.

The exhibition is part of the Chiasso Bi11 Image Biennial.
