Poussin and dance: the National Gallery announces an exhibition on the theme

The National Gallery announces an exhibition dedicated to Poussin and dance. It is the first exhibition on the theme.

The National Gallery in London has announced the exhibition event that will be featured in the last months of this year, from October 9, 2021 to January 2, 2022: Poussin and Dance.

This is the first exhibition dedicated to the French artist on this theme: paintings, drawings, and ancient sculptures he studied will be on display. In his unique dance paintings, Nicolas Poussin brings the classical world of gods and mortals to life with wild and chaotic movements: half-naked figures twirl, tambourines shake, wine is poured. These are moving scenes depicted by the painter, in which dance, drama and revelry are mixed.

In order to create these canvases based on dynamism, on the movement of the characters represented, Poussin had invented a special studio tool: models of wax figurines that the artist maneuvered in the different compositions, emphasizing his role not only as a painter, but also as an almost theatrical stage choreographer.

The presence of paintings, drawings and sculptures invites the public to understand the evolution of the artist’s ideas from marble to paper to painting.

The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery in London and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
