Antonacci Lapiccirella Fine Art Gallery in Rome presents Lights and Colors in Art. European Painting between the 19th and 20th Centuries, an exhibition opening Thursday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. and open to the public until Jan. 30, 2026. The exhibition aims to offer an in-depth reading of the founding role that light and color played in European painting between the mid-19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, a period marked by profound transformations in artistic vision, influenced by new poetics, scientific research and changes in the social environment. The exhibition itinerary unfolds as a narrative in images, in which light and color establish a continuous dialogue, offering visitors diverse and unprecedented suggestions.
The selected works highlight different sensibilities: from the sublime luminosity of Jean Achille Benouville to the radical chromatic synthesis of an abstract sunrise by Guido Marussig, via the sophisticated symbolist variations of a moonlight by Gustaf Fjaestad. The itinerary also includes early 20th-century color research, represented by a sunset by Walter Gasch and a Nordic twilight by Oskar Bergman, in which color becomes a measure of interiority. The exhibited works are placed in dialogue with each other, configuring a coherent itinerary that reflects on the evolution of the perception of light and color. In this context, light and color cease to be mere descriptive tools, taking on a conceptual, emotional and symbolic role, capable of narrating states of mind and personal visions of individual artists. The itinerary allows visitors to observe how harmonies, glows, hues and shades have been interpreted in different ways: each artist captures the own vibration of light and color, translating it into specific forms, atmospheres and feelings. Through the display, the visitor can follow the evolution of European painting over a time span that includes from the romantic and sublime light of the 19th century to Symbolist experiments and from the first chromatic investigations of the 20th century to more abstract and introspective declinations. In this sense, Light and Color in Art offers a key to understanding that links technique, perception and meaning, highlighting how light and color have progressively assumed an autonomous and decisive role in defining pictorial space and transmitting sensations and concepts.
