TheState Archives of Rome is dedicating an exhibition to Laurel and Hardy. In fact, from April 8 to May 31, the Archives is hosting, at the Sala Alessandrina, From Cellulose to Celluloid: The Flying Devils of Laurel and Hardy. Archival documents, music, film papers and frames for laughs. The initiative is the result of a collaboration with theL’Aquila Film Institute The Magic Lantern, owner of the SOS Laurel and Hardy project, the Central State Archives and the Casa del Cinema in Trieste.

The exhibition traces the cinematic successes of Laurel and Hardy ’s “comedies” in Italy from the 1930s to the 1940s. Photos, playbills, music and comics restore their laughter and fun, while partly unpublished correspondence, identified at the State Archives in Rome (bankruptcy files of the Court of Rome) and the Central State Archives(ENAIPE fund), document the fascist regime’s interest in Hollywood cinema. The Flying Deuces (1939), Italianized as I Diavoli Volanti, around which the exhibition revolves, is the film that best represents this context. The only film whose importation from the U.S.A. was authorized, in derogation of autarkic prohibitions and, moreover, in wartime, it stands out for the solutions adopted in dubbing and musical adaptation. Accompanying the exhibition will be a number of screenings of films by the comedy duo in versions recovered by the SOS Laurel and Hardy Project. As a preview for Rome, the Italian version of I Diavoli Volanti will be screened, with the original dubbing by the Alberto Sordi - Mauro Zambuto duo, with never-before-seen discoveries regarding the soundtrack.

The screening of the films, with free admission, will be introduced by the curators with a presentation of the Project and enriched by rare recovered materials.
