Venice Biennale launches competition for young emerging artists

The Venice Biennale is launching a competition for young emerging artists under 30. Twelve projects will be selected and exhibited as part of the next edition of the event. Here's how to participate.

La Biennale di Venezia is launching the first Biennale College Arte call for submissions, a competition for emerging artists that aims to complement theInternational Art Exhibition with a laboratory of higher education, research and experimentation for the development and production of projects by emerging artists under 30 from around the world. The Biennale College Arte international call for submissions will be open for six weeks, from Wednesday, June 16 until Monday, July 26, 2021: emerging artists under 30 from all over the world (who are under 31 years of age on the application deadline date), who have participated in at least one group exhibition and whose work has been dedicated at least one solo exhibition in nationally and/or internationally recognized exhibition spaces, will be eligible to participate.

Twelve projects will be selected, and the winning artists will be invited to participate in a 10-day workshop dedicated to the development of the proposed projects, to be held in Venice in October 2021. The workshop, which will alternate individual and group moments, will be coordinated by the Director of the Visual Arts Sector of the2021 edition, Cecilia Alemani, together with curators and artists, tutors and mentors directly involved in the development of the projects with the participants.

Once the 10-day workshop is over, the artists will have three weeks to work on the projects and deliver a final proposal. Based on the evaluation of the materials, Cecilia Alemani will select up to four projects, which will be eligible for a maximum grant of 25,000 euros for the realization of the final work. The works will be presented, out of competition, in the context of the 59th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Il latte dei sogni / The Milk of Dreams, curated by Cecilia Alemani.

“With the launch of the College Arte,” says Biennale President Roberto Cicutto, “La Biennale offers another important opportunity for young artists to broaden the scope of their professional relationships and especially to forge relationships with other young people and established professionals. The artists will be accompanied in a new fundamental stage of their growth by the curator of the International Exhibition and the tutors who will assist them. After Cinema, Dance, Theater, Music and Historical Archives, Art could not miss this deepening that has characterized the Biennale’s activities for many years. I am grateful to the Curator of the Biennale Arte 2022, Cecilia Alemani, for accepting to open this new challenge, which loads her with more responsibility and work. But I am confident that the results, which will be achieved starting next year and for many years to come, will largely repay the effort invested. La Biennale is delighted to welcome even more young artists into its family, to whom we wish the best of luck in tackling this extraordinary new experience with us.”

Biennale College is the Venice Biennale’s project dedicated to the training and support of young people in all artistic sectors and in the activities proper to the organizational structure of the Biennale. Already active for the sectors of Cinema, Dance, Music, Theater and Historical Archives, Biennale College was created with the aim of promoting young talents, offering them to work in contact with Masters for the development of “creations” that will become part of the programs of the Artistic Sectors.

The full text of the Biennale College Arte call for proposals is available online at www.labiennale.org. All required materials must be submitted by July 26. The selected will be notified of the result on August 23. On September 15, the 12 selected projects will be announced. The workshop will be held from Oct. 1 to Oct. 10, 2021, and Nov. 1 is the deadline for the delivery of the final project, budget and schedule required from the artists of the 12 selected projects. By November 15, the results of the final selection will be announced, between January 11 and 17, 2022 there will be the online pre-production workshop, and finally April 1 is set as the delivery date in Venice.
