Beato Angelico, record number of visitors for exhibition between Palazzo Strozzi and San Marco

250,000 visitors to Palazzo Strozzi and 100,000 to Museo di San Marco for Beato Angelico exhibition in Florence, an unprecedented success: it is the most visited exhibition in the history of Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi.

It closed yesterday, Sunday, January 25, 2026, the Beato Angelico exhibition, the major exhibition that, in Florence, Palazzo Strozzi and Museo Nazionale di San Marco dedicated to Beato Angelico, one of the fathers of the Italian Renaissance(here is our review), which, in recent months, has been an exceptional success with the public and critics. Promoted and organized by the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi together with the Ministry of Culture - Regional Directorate National Museums Tuscany and the Museo di San Marco, the initiative has been one of the main exhibition events of the Italian cultural season, confirming itself as a reference event in the international panorama of ancient art exhibitions. Curated by Carl Brandon Strehlke with Stefano Casciu and Angelo Tartuferi, the exhibition took place in an unprecedented and articulated dialogue between two symbolic venues of the city of Florence: Palazzo Strozzi and the Museo di San Marco. A choice that allowed a broad and in-depth narrative of the figure and work of Beato Angelico, relating the historical, artistic and spiritual context in which the artist worked with the heritage still preserved today in the places most directly linked to him.

The final balance confirms exceptional numbers. In the 122 days it was open, Palazzo Strozzi welcomed more than 250,000 visitors, a figure that makes Beato Angelico the most visited exhibition in the 20-year history of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi. At the same time, the Museo di San Marco recorded over 100,000 admissions during the exhibition period, quadrupling the number of visitors compared to the same time frame the previous year. A significant increase that underscores the impact of the exhibition on the Dominican museum as well, the custodian of one of the most important nuclei of Beato Angelico’s works, and highlights the effectiveness of the synergy between the two venues in enhancing the Florentine artistic heritage. In addition, the exhibition also won first place in the ranking of the best ancient or modern art exhibitions of 2025 drawn up by the jury of more than 100 experts assembled by Finestre sull’Arte.

Of the visitors, 83 percent were Italian and foreign visitors who were not residents of the Florence metropolitan area. Eighty percent, or about 200,000 visitors, came to Florence on purpose to visit the exhibition (on a one-day or extended stay), the highest figure ever recorded in the history of the Foundation. More than 2,500 organized groups, including more than 300 school classes and more than 70 university groups. (By contrast, 1,243 groups at St. Mark’s Museum, including schools). On the other hand, more than 12,000 people participated in the activities. Those on the other hand reached on social channels were 6.5 million, with more than 2,520 interactions between likes, comments and shares. During the period of the exhibition, Palazzo Strozzi’s website recorded over 260 thousand users (so just under 40 thousand per month) with 1.185 million views.
