Los Angeles, the Oscar Museum will open in 2021. A Miyazaki retrospective will open it

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles will open in April 2021. Opening it will be the first retrospective in the United States of Hayao Miyazaki.

TheAcademy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles will open on April 30, 2021, already presenting itself as the world’s first institution dedicated to the art and science of film. It will offer exhibitions and programs devoted entirely to the world of film, in an immersive and dynamic way, and will tell many trivia and stories through a wide variety of voices.

Designed by Renzo Piano, the museum will consist of six floors to house exhibitions, special events, a studio, a café and a store; in addition, the two integrated theaters, one of 1,000 seats and the other of 280, will present an annual calendar of screenings, film series, membership programs, family programs and symposia. The programs will include retrospectives and thematic series designed to illustrate the artistic and cultural contributions of an international selection of film artists.

The museum collection will include numerous works on paper and moving images tracing the history of film in the United States and around the world and of the Oscars, since this is the institution’s museum that presents the Academy Awards.

A mirror gallery will welcome visitors for an introduction, through multi-screens, to the Stories of Cinema exhibition, which will continue by celebrating different films, artists, eras and genres. One section will be dedicated to Spike Lee, Bruce Lee, Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, and Oscar Micheaux. A gallery, on the other hand, will be dedicated to The Wizard of Oz, immersing the audience in scenes from the famous film. The third floor will feature installations by director Pedro Almodóvar, musician Hildur Guðnadóttir, and sound designer Ben Burtt, all Oscar winners: an immersive experience, titled Inventing Worlds and Characters, will let visitors discover how all the professionals in the film world, from designers to producers, costume designers, makeup artists, special effects artists, etc. manage to create new environments and world and new characters, whether based on reality or purely invented. The audience will also meet “familiar faces,” such as E.T., Princess Leia, Snow White, Bugs Bunny, Okoye from Black Panther, and many other characters.

It will also be possible to delve into the environment inspired by the film Matrix.

The Academy Museum will open with the first retrospective in a U.S. museum of Hayao Miyazaki: curated by Jessica Niebel and J. Raúl Guzmán and organized in collaboration with the Japanese studioe Ghibil, which Miyazaki has co-founded since 1985. More than three hundred objects will be on display, including character drawings, backgrounds, posters, and rodovectors from the Ghibil archives, some of them exhibited outside Japan for the first time.
