MAMbo launches first exhibition project to bring art by mail in letter form

Dear you is MAMbo Bologna's new exhibition project to be received by postal mail.

In line with the current situation of semi-isolation to which the world’s population is forced, MAMbo in Bologna presents a new exhibition project based on postal correspondence.

Dear you, this is the title of the initiative curated by Caterina Molteni, includes six interventions by international artists, whose works are conceived as poems, short stories, and works in the form of letters, which project members will receive through postal correspondence. The artists reflect on issues of fundamental importance in our contemporary times, such as the loss of physical contact and its repercussions on emotional life, the weakening of shared social life, and the need to create new strategies of relationship and care beyond the digital experience. The project aims to observe intimacy not only as suffering loneliness, but as a site of possible and vital self-determination.

The title, Dear you, recalls love correspondence to emphasize the intimacy that is created by receiving a letter and, above all, intends to emphasize how postal correspondence is able to nurture dynamics of care thanks to its ability to transform a distant voice into something close and tangible. The artworks will also reach across national geographic boundaries, fostering the exchange of ideas and gestures of care.

The artists involved in the project are Hamja Ahsan (London, 1981), Giulia Crispiani (Ancona, 1986), Dora García (Valladolid, 1965), Allison Grimaldi Donahue (Middletown, 1984), Ingo Niermann (Bielefeld, 1969) and David Horvitz (Los Angeles, 1982).

To participate in Dear you and thus receive the six artworks in letter form, you must register (there is time until March 14, 2021) and an entry fee of 20 euros (for those with Card Cultura 12 euros).

For each entry, Dear you plans to send six letters, one for each artist involved. Each submission will contain a work in letter form and an accompanying text about the project. A letter is scheduled to be sent every two weeks, tentatively between March and May 2021. Included in the project entry is a ticket for access to MAMbo’s collections to be used by 2021 (we recommend reserving HOMAGE admission through the online pre-purchase service at www.midaticket.it).
