Montepulciano, Crociani Art Gallery is enriched with Madonna and Child by Matteo di Giovanni

The Madonna and Child with Saints Sebastian and John the Evangelist and four angels by Matteo di Giovanni, a significant example of Sienese Renaissance painting, has become part of the exhibition itinerary of the Crociani Civic Art Gallery Museum in Montepulciano.

The Madonna and Child, Saints Sebastian and John the Evangelist and four angels by Matteo di Giovanni (Sansepolcro, ca. 1430 - Siena, 1495), also known as Matteo da Siena, has become part of the exhibition itinerary of the Crociani Pinacoteca Civic Museum in Montepulciano. It is a significant example of Sienese Renaissance painting dated between 1488 and 1490; the work can now be seen in the museum’s room dedicated to Sienese and Florentine works from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, thanks to a ten-year deposit agreement with the owners.

Made in tempera and gold on panel, it was originally intended for private devotion, as both its small size and its carved and gilded frame suggest. Approaching the panel, which is in an excellent state of preservation, one is struck by the luminous details in gold that embellish the Madonna’s robe, as well as other elements that testify to the finesse of the painting technique employed.

"This is an extraordinary enrichment for the Pinacoteca Poliziana, which from today can host a painting of great quality belonging to one of the most important Sienese artists of the late 15th century, thanks to the coordinated work between the property, the Municipality and the Museum, as well as the professionalism of the municipal workers, commented Montepulciano Mayor Michele Angiolini.

“The entry of this work takes on great civic and social value, so today the Crociani Civic Museum Picture Gallery acquires further prestige and takes another step in the reorganization program undertaken and carried out by director Patrizia La Porta,” stressed Culture Councillor Lara Pieri.

“Matteo di Giovanni,” explained Museum director Patrizia La Porta, “is a painter originally from Borgo San Sepolcro, but with a strictly Sienese upbringing, so much so that for his training he had Vecchietta as a reference. The painting belongs to the maturity of the artist and is characterized by a solid composition of the figures and a special luministic attention that enhances the precious details of the painting.”

Also speaking at the presentation of the work held a few days ago was Massimo Boschi, an official of the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Siena, Arezzo and Grosseto, who expressed the Soprintendenza’s satisfaction with this deposit, which allows one of the most relevant works in the painter’s catalog to be preserved and admired in an ideal context.

The work can be seen during the opening hours of the Museo Civico Pinacoteca Crociani, Monday through Sunday, closed Tuesdays, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
