Paestum Archaeological Park's new free app is born

Paestum Archaeological Park's new free app is available online: in six languages and LIS for universal accessibility of the park.

The new app of the Paestum Archaeological Park is born to improve the enjoyment of the archaeological site following the principles ofuniversal accessibility.

The mobile app will be presented at the Paestum Archaeological Museum on Friday, November 15, 2019 at 10 a.m., as part of the XXII edition of the Mediterranean Archaeological Tourism Exchange.

Available in six languages (Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese) and in LIS, the app offers customized itineraries by themes, duration, and interests and will be free to download on Apple store and Android; it was created by ECCOM in collaboration with VISIVALAB and theState Institute for the Deaf.

This new user tool allows for customization by duration, with two options of 60 and 90 minutes. Once the time of the visit is set, various topics can be selected: myths and rituals, daily life, Greek and Lucanian Paestum, and Roman Paestum. A geolocalized map will be displayed on which the user can choose the various points of interest, each with a dedicated tab. The visitor will then be able to create a unique and personal journey. App Paestum is also supported by the Municipality of Capaccio - Paestum, which has granted patronage to the initiative for the installation of promotional banners at access points to the city, including Paestum station.

"This new app offers the possibility to discover not only the monumental elements of Paestum, but also aspects of the daily life of the city and the people who inhabited it, through a narrative made of stories, sounds, and scents that allow people to get in touch with the different historical moments of which it was a protagonist," said Francesco Uliano Scelza, archaeologist of the Park.

“With this project, we have fulfilled one of the promises of the cultural heritage reform: to bring back within the administration the planning and management of the educational offer. And we decided to write the texts we archaeologists, architects and user assistants together with external professionals, thus also investing in our human resources. As for management, we opted to offer the app free of charge to all our visitors, the intellectual property being exclusively ours and not that of an external concessionaire as was often the case in the past,” said Park Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel.
