The Metropolitan Museum turns 150 and tells its story online from 1870 to the present

The Metropolitan Museum celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding in lockdown. Online its history from 1870 to 2020.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has turned 150 years old. After the American War of Secession, plans were made in 1870 for an art museum for New York City, but there was no art inside, it was still just a building. Today it has become one of the largest and most important museums in the world, and on April 13, 2020, it celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding in lockdown.

The New York museum venue holds more than 1.5 million objects and has seven million visitors from around the world each year.

To mark the anniversary, the Making the Met, 1870-2020 exhibition was scheduled to open on March 30, but due to the health emergency, it did not open. The museum therefore thought to tell the story of the exhibition online: the latter traces the history of the museum venue through the ten most significant episodes that led it to its current appearance.

It starts with a print illustrating the first opening to the public, which took place on February 20, 1872, and reaches through the decades to collections from around the world and from the most diverse cultures.
The anniversary provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the Metropolitan Museum’s history from 1870 to 2020 and prospects for the future.

The exhibition was organized by Andrea Bayer and Laura D.Corey and was made possible by the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation.
