The Morandi House Museum in Grizzana Morandi (Bologna) will officially reopen its doors to the public on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 6 p.m., after a restoration project that restored the rooms to theiroriginal appearance, the one Giorgio Morandi himself wanted for his beloved Apennine home. The work was made possible thanks to PNRR funds and the “Da Campolo l’Arte fa Scola” project.

During the opening ceremony, after institutional greetings by Mayor Franco Rubini, Cristina Ambrosini, head of the Cultural Heritage Sector of the Emilia-Romagna Region, and Francesco Dalmastri, designer of the intervention, will speak. Following this, Marilena Pasquali, president of the Giorgio Morandi Study Center, will offer a historical-artistic reading of the house and its value.

The House Museum

The house, built in the late 1950s, became a museum thanks to the donation of Maria Teresa Morandi, the artist’s younger sister, to the City of Grizzana. She lived and died in this house in 1994, leaving it with the request that it be preserved intact and opened to visitors.

The two-story building was designed with the house across the street, Casa Veggetti, as a reference, where the Morandi family had found hospitality since 1913. The landscape so beloved by the painter was next door: one only had to look out to catch a glimpse of the Campiaro barns and the surrounding woods. Despite his well-established success-at the time he was teaching “Engraving Techniques” at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna-Morandi wanted a simple, essential house, in keeping with the sober style that also characterized the still lifes he painted.

Inside, the artist’s library, studio and bedroom stand out for their interest. The library reveals his literary preferences, with many volumes autographed by writers and family friends. On the walls, some photolithographic reproductions of his watercolors; in the sideboard, glasses and bottles kept exactly as they were. The dining room, like the library, is also soberly but tastefully furnished. On the ground floor are the sisters’ room and the kitchen, still filled with the family’s everyday objects. Upstairs is another sisters’ room with closets that hold the original clothes and linens, Giorgio’s bedroom, and the study.

In 2022, the Morandi House Museum, already part of the Houses of Memory circuit, was included by the Emilia-Romagna Region among the “Houses and Studios of the Illustrious People of Emilia-Romagna,” recognized by Regional Law 2/2022.

The new website

On the occasion of the reopening, the new official website of the Morandi House Museum will also be launched, created thanks to contributions from Regional Law 2/2022. The platform is designed to make it easier to access information about the museum, works and events related to the figure of the painter.

In 2024, the same law also supported the creation of the Network of the Illustrious Residences of the Apennines, a tourist itinerary designed especially for families, which includes visits to the Morandi House Museum, Rocchetta Mattei (also in Grizzana) and Palazzo Comelli, in the nearby municipality of Camugnano.

Starting Sunday, July 2025, the House Museum will be open every Saturday and Sunday, from 3 to 6 p.m. On other days, it will be possible to visit by reservation.
