The Spazio Ex Caserma, a new center for contemporary ceramics, is born in Loreto Aprutino (Pescara, Italy)

The Spazio Ex Caserma, a project of the No Man's Land Foundation dedicated to artist ceramics, has been open in Loreto Aprutino (Pescara) for two weeks. Exhibitions, research and educational activities are at the center of an initiative supported by MiC, featuring works by great Italian and international masters.

Last October 11, a new space dedicated to artist ceramics was inaugurated in Loreto Aprutino (Pescara). Indeed, in the premises of the former barracks in Via Roma 59 opens the Spazio Ex Caserma, a project promoted by the No Man’s Land Foundation with the support of the Ministry of Culture’s General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity and the Contemporary Creativity Laboratory. The new center was created as a place dedicated to conservation, valorization and research in the field of contemporary ceramics, with an exhibition and educational program involving national and international institutions and artistic realities. It opens with a group exhibition curated by Alessandro Cocchieri, director of Villa Pacchiani in Santa Croce sull’Arno, which brings together works by some of the most important names on the Italian and international art scene: Marco Bagnoli, Alberto Garutti, Fabrice Hyber, Gülsün Karamustafa, Felice Levini, H.H. Lim, Luigi Ontani, Gino Sabatini Odoardi, Remo Salvadori, Donatella Spaziani, Giuseppe Stampone, Vedovamazzei. The selection presents a broad panorama of the expressive possibilities of ceramics in contemporary artistic language, showing how a material deeply linked to tradition can be reinterpreted in a current and experimental key.

The project was also born as a continuation of the collaboration between the No Man’s Land Foundation, the Civic Museums of Loreto Aprutino and the Giacomo Acerbo Foundation, which has long been committed to the valorization of Castelli ceramics, a historical excellence of Abruzzo. The Spazio Ex Caserma thus stands as a node connecting memory and research, capable of interweaving the traditional ceramic heritage with the most innovative practices of contemporary art. The goal is to transform the new center into an active laboratory. Alongside the exhibition activity, in fact, initiatives aimed at schools of all levels are planned, aimed at the knowledge and direct experimentation of the ceramic material. Added to these are collaborations with academic institutions such as the Faculty of Architecture of the “Gabriele D’Annunzio” University of Pescara and theAcademy of Fine Arts of L’Aquila, which will help develop research and training paths for students and young artists.

The project is supported by the MiC’s General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity, the Pescarabruzzo Foundation and the Municipality of Loreto Aprutino, and represents an important step in the construction of a territorial network dedicated to signature ceramics. The initiative also confirms the desire to strengthen the link between contemporary art production and the local cultural fabric, fitting into the broader path of enhancing art in Abruzzo. The Ex Barracks Space was created as part of the activities of the No Man’s Land (NML) Foundation, a project launched in 2016 from a shared idea between architect Yona Friedman, a key figure in 20th-century utopian architecture, and Mario Pieroni and Dora Stiefelmeier of the Zerynthia association. Located on about two hectares of farmland in the hilly landscape of Loreto Aprutino, the foundation is conceived as a space open to artistic experimentation, meeting and sharing of collective practices. A place where nature and art come together, and where the artists’ interventions are configured as tools for dialogue with the surrounding landscape, among olive groves and vineyards.
