Ai Weiwei created 10 thousand signature masks and sells them for charity against Covid-19

Renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has created ten thousand masks that he will sell to raise funds to fight the coronavirus.

Renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei (Beijing, 1957) has created ten thousand masks reproducing details of his works, and he will sell them for charity to raise funds for the fight against coronavirus Covid-19. They are simple surgical masks on which were reproductions of his works, and the sale will take place on eBay: the works will cost $50 each, while the price will be 300 for a set of four, and 1,500 for the pack of twenty. Proceeds will go to three organizations: Human Rights Watch, Refugees International, and Doctors Without Borders.

“Each of our small individual gestures,” said Ai Weiwei, “becomes powerful when it is part of a social response. An individual wearing a mask makes a gesture, a society wearing masks fights a deadly virus. And a society that wears masks because individuals choose it, without them following directives from authorities, can challenge and resist any force. No will is too small and no action is too futile.”

Ai Weiwei’s mask project is curated by Alessandra Munroe, according to whom these personal protective devices are a symbol of life during the coronavirus. “Having one,” she said, “is an ethical and creative act to overcome our weary isolation and participate in a collective enterprise of true understanding.”
