An 18th-century masterpiece of cabinetmaking, the Piffetti Library, comes alive in augmented reality at Villa della Regina

Thanks to a digital project by the Politecnico di Torino and Shazarch, the famous 18th-century bookcase built for Villa della Regina, now at the Quirinale, is back on view in its original context with AR and VR. Official presentation on June 13.

The Piffetti Library, an example of Baroque cabinetmaking, is back on view at Villa della Regina in Turin, the place for which it was conceived in the 18th century. It is a virtual restitution, made possible by augmented reality and virtual reality technologies. The event presenting the project, entitled Restoring Memory. Virtual Reconstruction of the Piffetti Library for Cultural Heritage Accessibility, will be held on Friday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at the Hall of Honor of Villa della Regina in Turin.

The library was built for the Library Cabinet of the Villa della Regina, one of the most elegant Savoy residences in the Piedmont region. Transferred in 1879 to the Quirinal Palace, where it still stands today, the work has since lost its original context. Today, thanks to a collaboration between the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) of the Polytechnic University of Turin and the company Shazarch s.r.l., the bookcase can once again be admired in its original location, albeit in virtual form.

During the public meeting on June 13, the results of the project and the technical solutions adopted for its implementation will be presented. The morning’s program will include, at 11 a.m., institutional greetings by Filippo Masino, Director of the Savoy Royal Residences, Sara Lyla Mantica, Director of Villa della Regina, and Diana Rolando, Vice-Director of the Department of Architecture and Design of the Polytechnic University of Turin. Following this, at 11:30 a.m., Chiara Teolato, Director of the Reggia di Venaria Reale, will speak with a reflection on the role of digital technologies for cultural accessibility, and the working group responsible for the virtual reconstruction, composed of Roberta Spallone, Michele Russo, MarcoVitali, Valerio Palma, Enrico Pupi and Martina Rinascimento. The project was developed in two main modes: augmented reality and virtual reality.

The former allows visitors to Villa della Regina to see Piffetti’s library directly in the Library Cabinet, its original space, using a smartphone and a dedicated app. Simply download the free app and frame the environment with the camera to view the digitally reconstructed library in real time, with a level of detail that restores the accuracy and refinement of the original materials. The technology makes it possible to offer a dynamic and participatory form of enjoyment, adaptable to different audiences. In parallel, a virtual reality version will be available in the Audiovisual Room of Villa della Regina. From 12:30 p.m. onward, an open discussion is scheduled, followed, at 12:40 p.m., by the opportunity to test both technologies: augmented reality in the Library Cabinet and virtual reality in the Audiovisual Room. Admission is free while places are available.
