An appeal by MiBACT art historians to save monumental heritage devastated by the 2016 earthquake

An appeal has been signed by sixty MiBACT art historians to secure and safeguard the monumental heritage devastated by the 2016 earthquake

Sixty art historians from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage have signed an appeal for action to secure and safeguard the monumental heritage of the Apennines devastated by the 2016 earthquake.

The appeal reads, “The great effort produced by the Administration to which we belong, also with the contribution of the personnel who voluntarily converged from all over Italy to join their work with that of the other bodies of the State present in the affected territories - Carabinieri and Fire Brigade -, has made it possible to save as much as possible of the historical and artistic heritage of those territories, over a vast geographical area. It has been an enormous amount of work, but it is not enough.[...]We therefore appeal that the necessary resources be allocated as soon as possible for the securing of severely damaged or partially destroyed buildings, frescoes and fixed decorative apparatuses left exposed by the collapsing roofs. We call for the economic, organizational and procedural effort necessary to restore to the national cultural heritage one of its rarest and most precious chapters and to the territories so hard hit their historical face and, with it, the prospect of the future.”
