Brunelleschi's herringbone pattern discovered in Cappella Capponi in Santa Felicita

During the restoration of the Capponi Chapel in Santa Felicita, the same herringbone pattern that Brunelleschi used for the dome of the Duomo was discovered.

During the restoration, which began in March 2017 and has now been completed, of the Capponi Chapel in the church of Santa Felicita in Florence, a discovery was made.

Part of the ancient dome that was made by Brunelleschi was created following the model of the famous dome of the Duomo, namely with the technique of bricks walled in a herringbone pattern. The great architect then, before accomplishing the extraordinary feat of the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, created the Barbadori Chapel by walling bricks in a herringbone pattern; the Capponi Chapel was later built on top of this chapel.

The restoration was made possible thanks to funding from Friends of Florence, and investigations were carried out on the structures and surfaces.
