Henrike Naumann, the artist who, together with Vietnamese artist Sung Tieu, is representing Germany at the Venice Art Biennale 2026, curated by Kathleen Reinhardt, passed away at just 41 years old following a cancer diagnosis that came too late.
Born in 1984 in Zwickau, in former East Germany, Naumann has dedicated her research to the social and cultural transformations that followed German reunification. Her installations, constructed through furniture, everyday objects and sound components, use interior design as a critical tool to investigate themes such as identity and ideology. In his work, domestic space is transformed into a political and narrative environment: every element, from the furniture to the perspective arrangement, contributes to evoking memory, historical tensions and cultural stratifications.
In recent years her presence on the international scene has been consolidated, including through her participation in documenta 15 in 2022. Henrike Naumann’s work is a fundamental contribution to understanding the ambivalences and complexities of contemporary society.
