Inaugurated the new MASI headquarters at the Royal Palace after three years of renovations

Lugano's Palazzo Reali branch of the Museum of Art of Italian Switzerland reopens to the public. Closed since 2016 for renovations.

The new home of the Museum of Art of Italian Switzerland in the Palazzo Reali has been inaugurated. Closed for renovations in 2016, it has been reopened to the public with a layout featuring the most significant works from the collection.

The display, curated by Cristina Sonderegger, spans three floors: in addition to works divided by artist, theme, historical period and artistic current, the history of MASI is shown through audiovisual documents from the archives of Swiss Radio and Television. Portrait painting in the nineteenth century, Symbolism, the Return to Order of the 1920s, photography in the 1930s, and Expressionism follow: these are just some of the themes addressed in the exhibition itinerary. Also featured will be Niele Toroni’s wall intervention, titled Impronte di pennello n.50 ripetute a intervalli regolari, executed on the occasion of the opening of the Museo Cantonale d’Arte to the public in 1987, and Vincenzo Vela ’s monumental Spartacus alongside the large painting Golena by the young Ticino artist Marco Scorti and the wooden Deposition dating from the 14th-15th centuries.

The rooms of Palazzo Reali will be dedicated to the permanent collection and to projects related to local and internationally renowned artists. MASI’s two locations will enable the museum to offer a continuous and varied cultural proposal to reach a wider audience.

“After 30 years of activity, the adaptation of the exhibition spaces and the reorganization of the administrative spaces of the Palazzo Reali were necessary to allow the museum, now among the most visited in Switzerland, to continue to guarantee its institutional mission of preserving and enhancing the artistic heritage and to continue with a high level of exhibition programming,” said MASI director Tobia Bezzola.
