The MEIS, National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah, was inaugurated yesterday in Ferrara.

A museum dedicated to Jewish history and life, starting with the experience of Italian Jews: more than two millennia narrated through Jewish traditions and culture with video contributions, objects, reproductions, texts and images.

The museum opened with the exhibition"Jews, an Italian History. The first thousand years," aimed at telling the public about the first thousand years of Jewish Italy. On display are more than two hundred objects, including manuscripts, medieval documents, Roman and medieval epigraphs, rings, seals, coins and amulets from international museums, such as the Genizah in Cairo, the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, the Bodleian Library in Oxford, the Vatican Museums and Cambridge University Library.
An exhibition curated by Anna Foa, Giancarlo Lacerenza and Daniele Jalla.

In addition, the multimedia show"With the Eyes of the Italian Jews" will offer a look at the history of Italy from the point of view of an Italian Jew and present the themes of the MEIS.

The museum is located in the historic center of Ferrara and until 1992 housed the city’s prisons.

Also present at the opening were Dario Franceschini and Sergio Mattarella.

Minister Franceschini said, “This is an important place because it recalls the Jewish presence in the country, and it will be a very important place for young people, for people who know little about the millennial history of Italian Judaism. In addition, it will be a place of interest for international tourism: we presented it in New York and Jerusalem, and we had demonstrations of great interest. It will also focus on school tourism, on bringing children from Italy and abroad to know and understand, because investing in knowledge means offering the strongest antidote to all the risks and fears of this time.”

MEIS, the exhibition and installation will be open until Sept. 16, 2018 from Tuesday to Wednesday and Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Closed Mondays, March 31, Sept. 10 and Sept. 19.

Tickets: Full 10 euros, reduced 8 euros.
