Milan, the Broletto Well will be restored by Cosmetica Italia. No cost to the municipality

The Pozzo del Broletto, in Piazza Mercanti, a significant example of 16th-century Milanese architecture, will be fully restored by Cosmetica Italia. At no cost to the City of Milan.

The Milan City Council has approved the donation proposal submitted by Cosmetica Italia - Associazione Nazionale Imprese Cosmetiche for the conservative restoration of the Pozzo del Broletto, in Piazza Mercanti, a significant example of 16th-century Milanese architecture.

Located next to the Palazzo della Ragione, the Well will undergo a conservation intervention that will include verification of the structures, surface treatment, maintenance of the metal elements and non-invasive diagnostic surveys using Georadar technology. The initiative, fully funded by Cosmetica Italia as part of Milano Beauty Week - the event dedicated to the culture of beauty and wellness - intends to create a parallel with the world of cosmetics: the restoration, faithful and respectful of the original, will be a gesture of care to enhance the charm of time and historical memory.

The donation will fully cover the costs of design, execution and management of the intervention, for a total amount of 37,000 euros, at no cost to the City of Milan. The project, validated by theCity’s Fountains and Monuments Unit, will be carried out under the high supervision of the Administration and in coordination with the Superintendence. The operation is part of the strategic objectives of the Single Programming Document 2025-2027, which includes the enhancement of urban furniture and public spaces as key elements for the city’s cultural and tourism development.

“I thank Cosmetica Italia,” says Councillor for Neighborhoods and Participation Gaia Romani, “for this donation. The whole area of Piazza dei Mercanti, in general, is affected by an important path of care that the municipal administration is carrying out together with City Hall 1. I am thinking of the enhancement of the Loggia with the redevelopment of the Palazzo della Ragione, but also the installation of new benches that meet the need to balance the needs of residents with those of tourists, ensuring hospitality and protection of Milan’s public heritage.”

“We are grateful for this intervention offered to the city, which fits perfectly into the redevelopment project of Palazzo della Ragione, desired by the City Council together with the Chamber of Commerce and consistent with the functions that have always historically been exercised in this palace and in the ’agora’ of Piazza dei Mercanti since the 12th century,” says Culture Councillor Tommaso Sacchi. “Cultural functions inhabit the square again this summer with the third edition of ’The Evenings of the Merchants,’ which returns until Aug. 24 for the third consecutive year.”

“We are honored to engage with a philanthropic project that protects the artistic and architectural heritage of Milan’s capital city while preserving memory and evidence of the territory’s identity,” says Benedetto Lavino, president of Cosmetica Italia. “Restoring this Well means offering future generations a tangible symbol of values such as care, responsibility and sharing, in the belief that beauty is not only aesthetic, but also a resource to be preserved and passed on.”
