Minister Sangiuliano raises the possibility of an entrance fee to the Pantheon

Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano raises the possibility of introducing an entrance fee to the Pantheon. He says he is open to any solution to be defined with the City of Rome.

"I very much welcome the openness of the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, to reason together on the hypothesis of introducing an entrance fee to the Pantheon, the most visited museum site in Italy in 2019, the last pre-pandemic year, with 9,300,000 people," said Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano.

“Let’s also look at what happens in the rest of Europe: in France to visit the Musée de l’Armée, Invalides and Napoleon’s Tomb you pay 14 euros, in England the entrance to Westminster Abbey, where the British royals are buried, costs 25 euros, while in Roskilde, to visit the cathedral with the tombs of the Danish kings, you spend 60 kronor, about 8 euros,” Sangiuliano stressed. "With us, the ticket price will be much lower. Of course, Roman citizens and, as is already the case for all museums, young Europeans up to 18 years of age, the disabled and their carers, schoolchildren, teachers and tour guides will be exempt."

A ticket to visit the Pantheon had already been considered in 2017 , when former Culture Minister Dario Franceschini launched a proposal in 2017 to introduce an entrance fee, even at a reduced sum (for example, 2 or 3 euros). The introduction never came into effect. In 2018, his successor Alberto Bonisoli had expressed his intention to keep the monument free of charge: “Such a measure would have limited the traditional freedom of access in the capital’s churches of worship and created, moreover, a caesura between the monument and the square, which have always been perceived, by Romans and not only, as a harmonious unique whole, to be enjoyed without barriers.”

Now Minister Sangiuliano says he is open "to any solution to be defined with the City of Rome. We hope we can reason together to make this agreement operational as soon as possible, considering also that the resources should be allocated to the care of the Pantheon itself and that of the entire square."
