Monumental tomb with longest inscription so far discovered in Pompeii

During excavations near Porta Stabia in Pompeii, a monumental marble tomb with a 4-meter-long inscription was discovered.

Near Porta Stabia in Pompeii, a monumental marble tomb bearing aninscription more than 4 meters long was discovered during excavations: it is the longest funerary epigraph discovered so far.

The tomb is of one of ancient Pompeii’s most prominent figures: Gnaeus Alleus Nigidius Maio, the one who was responsible for organizing and financing gladiator shows.

The inscription recounts the various activities that accompanied the shows and the different aspects of life in the city’s Roman colony.

It is speculated that the funerary monument was complemented by a marble bas-relief with scenes of gladiator fights, which is now in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
