Nantes, cathedral arson investigation underway. Three points of origin

Firefighters have identified three points of origin of flames from which the Nantes cathedral fire spread. An arson investigation has been opened.

The public prosecutor’s office in Nantes, the French city where a serious and violent fire broke out in the Gothic cathedral this morning around 7:40 a.m., involving the facade and the spot where the grand organ is located, has opened an arson investigation.

The flames were contained around 10 a.m., and firefighters identified three points of origin of the fire: “one at the level of the great organ, one on the right and one on the left of the nave,” as stated by Pierre Senne’s, Nantes prosecutor. The identification of these three points from which the flames spread suggested the arson character of the fire and a criminal act.

The cathedral’smain organ was completely destroyed, but firefighters who arrived on the scene (about a hundred responded) said that the Nantes fire “is not comparable to that of Notre Dame.”
