Naples, 15 million euro digitization plan at Girolamini Library

A major 15-million digitization plan is starting at the Girolamini Library in Naples that will cover five thousand manuscripts.

The Ministry of Economic Development has approved a project, presented by the NetCom Group, SA Lombardia and SA Documents companies in collaboration with theFederico II University of Naples, for a plan to digitize the manuscripts of the Girolamini Library in Naples: this is a project, entitled “MAGIC,” worth more than 15 million euros supported by MISE with 6 million euros, 2.2 of which will go to the Federico II, which is the project’s scientific partner, and in particular to the Department of Humanities and the Department of Physics.

Five thousand ancient manuscripts will be digitized with these resources. The University, which is already active at the Girolamini with its advanced training course in History and Philology of the Manuscript and Ancient Book, will provide the expertise for cataloging and creating the indexing and search information, and the Department of Physics will provide the technological expertise, in collaboration with corporate partners, who are also committed to technology. The operations will be carried out on-site, through the use of special scanners for ancient books. There will then be ten fellowships and research grants on the project’s themes.

MAGIC, which is dedicated to the memory of Professor Alberto Varvaro, is directed by Professor Guido Russo, has a scientific committee consisting of Guido Trombetti, Andrea Mazzucchi and Pasqualino Maddalena, and will also lead to the creation of a service center for the enhancement of the Library. It will also be a way to further shine the name of Naples as a city where innovative research is initiated.

“With the MAGIC project,” says Domenico Lanzo, president and CEO of NetCom Group, “our company is aiming to confirm itself as an industrial group of reference at the national level in the panorama of the valorization of Cultural Heritage through the use of the most modern ICT technologies. And it is a great pride for us to have been part of this initiative together with such a prestigious University as the Federico II of Naples.”
