Pisa reduces the number of stalls in front of Piazza dei Miracoli: 35 thousand euros to those who leave

The City of Pisa is reducing the number of stalls in Piazza Manin, in front of Porta Nuova, the main entrance to Piazza dei Miracoli: ready 35 thousand euros for the hawkers who will close and therefore leave the location.

In Pisa, around the monumental area of Piazza dei Miracoli, the historic stalls that have their locations in and around Piazza Manin will see a drastic decrease with an operation of withdrawal by the City of Pisa of 10 licenses for as many hawkers to whom a compensation of 35 thousand euros will go. A “scrapping” of on-street concessions, as the city administration calls it, which in the coming weeks will publish a specific public notice addressed to stallholders in Piazza Manin interested in ceasing their activities by giving up their licenses. Today there are 88 stallholders operating in the area.

A ranking will then be drawn up, based on the criterion of seniority referring to the presence on the market, according to which the identified operators will be entitled to a refreshment/contribution of 35 thousand euros.

“As part of the process of reorganization and rationalization of the Market in the areas surrounding the Cathedral, which provides for the reduction of the number of locations present in Piazza Manin and the reallocation of parking spaces in the area adjacent to the monumental area.”, says Councillor for Commerce, Paolo Pesciatini, “the opportunity has been provided for operators to scrap their business in exchange for a refreshment/contribution from the municipal administration quantified in the amount of 35 thousand euros. This is a measure agreed upon with the trade associations during the approval of the new Commerce Plan, which aims to balance the economic interest of the hawkers with the need to reduce the number of stands in Piazza Manin.”

A process that will lead “to the progressive redevelopment and enhancement of the Cathedral Market according to the indications contained in the new Plan of Commerce in Public Areas, approved by the City Council in January 2022.” In recent days, the Council has in fact approved a resolution that kicks off the process, providing to make available 350 thousand euros for this operation.

The new Public Area Trade Plan of the City of Pisa was adopted in January 2022 to replace the old plan that dated back to 2001. The planning tool is aimed at revitalizing the city’s street vending trade and, as the Pisa municipal administration claims, “a definitive solution for the Duomo market (which takes on the new name of ’Market of the areas surrounding the Duomo’) so as to restore decorum, order and beauty to the entrance area of one of the most beautiful and visited squares in the world, a World Heritage Site.”

The stalls will be located in the following areas: Largo Cocco Griffi, Via Contessa Matilde, Piazza Manin, area facing Via Cammeo, portion of Via S. Maria, portion of Via Cardinale Maffi, Via Pietrasantina interchange parking lot, interchange parking lot adjacent to the university restaurant on Via Cammeo. The reallocation of the parking spaces will take place taking into account the seniority referred to the presence on the market of the operators, with the possibility of scrapping the concessions for those who will adhere to a special Notice of the Municipality of Pisa. The fixed-type stations will be built by the Municipal Administration and made available to operators. A concessionary lease fee will be charged against this investment.

The resolution approved by the Council also establishes the criteria for the transitional relocation of the stalls, which is necessary to allow for the redevelopment of the bicycle-pedestrian path dedicated to tourists in the section that starts from the exchanger parking lot in Via Pietrasantina and reaches Largo Cocco Griffi. The intervention (financed for a total of 5.812 million euros, including 2.312 million in PNRR funding and about 3.5 million, of resources of the Municipality of Pisa) will start soon and also includes the redevelopment of the monumental area that houses the tourist market, between Largo Cocco Griffi and Piazza Manin. The work is also part of the overall urban redevelopment project affecting the entire northwest area, which is being funded under the National Housing Quality Program (PINQUA).
