Pompeii, a marble manhole cover from the House of Siricus stolen. Investigations are ongoing

Another theft at Pompeii Archaeological Park: a marble manhole cover was stolen from a room in the House of Siricus. Carabinieri have started the investigation.
More thefts at the Pompeii Archaeological Park. The latter reports in a press note that on Monday, Oct. 4, a marble manhole cover, about 20 cm in diameter, referable to a cistern mouth in a room of the House of Siricus in Pompeii was found to have been removed. The Park reported the incident to the internal Carabinieri garrison, who launched an investigation.
In the House of Sirico, which is regularly open to the public, routine maintenance work is being carried out by Park restorers. Specifically, the marble facing of the cistern mouth had undergone safety work and metal brackets had been put in place to provide better support for the manhole cover itself.
“The park management took immediate steps to report the theft to the police,” said director Gabriel Zuchtriegel. "Checks are still being carried out through the internal video surveillance system to reconstruct what happened, which we hope will provide elements for the recovery of the artifact."
