Portion of the walls of the Medici Villa in Poggio a Caiano, a UNESCO heritage site, collapses

Due to bad weather, a portion of the walls of the Medici Villa in Poggio a Caiano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, collapses.

A portion of the walls of the Medici Villa in Poggio a Caiano (province of Prato) collapsed due to a heavy storm. The villa, among the best-known of those belonging to the Medici family, was commissioned by Lorenzo the Magnificent and built according to a design by Giuliano da Sangallo: construction began around 1485 but, which was interrupted when the Magnificent died in 1492, was not completed until the second half of the 16th century. Today it houses the Museo della Natura Morta and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013 (as part of Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany).

Firefighters and carabinieri responded to the scene for initial investigations. In the collapse of the portion of the wall (which would appear to be about 20 meters long) would have involved some cars, but no personal injuries were reported.
