On February 25, 26 and 27, 2019, the docu-film Tintoretto will be premiered in Italian cinemas. A Rebel in Venice, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his birth.

The documentary is produced by Sky Arte and is part of the Grande Arte al Cinema calendar, a Nexo Digital project in collaboration with Radio Capital and MYmovies.it.; it will be dedicated to one of the greatest Venetian painters in the history of art, Jacopo Robusti known as Tintoretto (1519-1594).



The film will start from the early years of his artistic training, through his art in his workshop, where his children Domenico and Marietta also worked, to his death. Features of 16th-century Venice, the dramatic period of the plague of 1575-1577, during which the artist produced his most important cycle, namely that of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, will be outlined.

Conceived and written by Melania G. Mazzucco and with the extraordinary participation of director Peter Greenaway, the film will be narrated by the voice of Stefano Accorsi; numerous experts will accompany viewers through Tintoretto’s life and art, such as art historians Kate Bryan, Matteo Casini, Astrid Zenkert, Agnese Chiari Moretto Wiel, Michel Hochmann, the co-curators of the Tintoretto 1519-2019 exhibition at the Doge’s Palace, Frederick Ilchman and Tom Nichols, writers Melania G. Mazzucco and Igiaba Scego, and restorers Sabina Vedovello and Irene Zuliani, involved in the restoration of the Due Marie.

In fact, the documentary will also observe the detailed analyses that will allow an Italian team to restore two masterpieces by Tintoretto: Mary in Meditation (1582 - 1583) and Mary Reading (1582 - 1583). Thanks to the support of Sky Arte, the two canvases will be restored before being displayed as part of Tintoretto’s monographic exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington that will take place in 2019.

In addition to the documentary, anunpublished comic book biography will be released. Tintoretto. A Rebel in Venice, a graphic novel for readers ages 14 and up, written by Alberto Bonanni on drawings by Gianmarco Veronesi. The volume traces in four full-color chapters the life of the Venetian artist and his alleged rivalry with another master of the 16th-century art scene, Titian Vecellio. This is the first comic book publication produced by Sky Arte in collaboration with TIWI, a creative studio formerly the publisher of the award-winning early childhood illustrated book brand minibombo. The volume will be available in all bookstores from March 2019.
