Roberto Coda Zabetta at work on a major work in Brittany.

Roberto Coda Zabetta (Biella, 1975), a highly regarded contemporary Italian artist, will create a large public work on the pier in Portivy on the Quiberon Peninsula in Brittany, France, on the occasion of the Cantiere 2 / Harbour project, a project at the basis of which there is a relationship of mutual implication between painting, architecture, the natural environment and landscape. The work began on the day of June 2.

Born in Biella in 1975 and active in the field of painting since 2000, Zabetta moved his studio precisely to the French region for the realization of a major intervention in the town’s harbor. The whole area is prepared with a thorough washing using a pressure washer, then layers of “matter” will be spread on the seawall, walls and harbor using natural pigments, oyster powder, fish glue and Airlite paint, zero-impact paint and pigments. The sea and time will dissolve this great work, animated by the energy of nature and made with total respect for the environment that received it.

For millennia, the force of the winds, tides, sea erosion, sun, rain, and salt spray have sculpted the coastline of the Quiberon Peninsula stretching into theAtlantic Ocean. Kilometers of coastline that pass under the designation of Côte Sauvage are protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral. The strength, intensity, and purity of this nature are primal elements that have inspired the artist and are also the themes on which his research has focused for over a year.

Roberto Coda Zabetta is keenly aware of the impossibility of curbing these uncontrollable elements and, therefore, the work will only be created by relating his linguistic cipher to the unpredictability of natural forces. The entire structure and abstract figure with which the artist has chosen to express himself, providing a meeting place between the senses and the intellect, aims to produce a seamless cross-reference between perception and thought thus allowing access to a dimension other than the one governed by the simple perspective with which we usually identify our relationship with external reality.

The entire process of the work, will be documented by photographer and filmmaker Henrik Blomqvist. The film production in collaboration with Black Mamba and graphic design by Matthew Blandford.
