'Sistine Chapel in VR,' a virtual reality version of the Sistine Chapel, wins in its category at the 2017 Content Innovation Awards in Cannes.

"The Sistine Chapel in VR," the interactive VR experience created by Sky and Flavio Parenti ’s Untold Games in collaboration with the Vatican Museums, won the Virtual Reality Initiative of the Year section at the 2017 Content Innovation Awards in Cannes, the awards for technological innovation in video entertainment organized by Digital TV Europe and Television Business International in Cannes.
On Sunday, Oct. 15, Sky content won the award dedicated to innovations that have succeeded in bringing the potential of VR closer to the video entertainment experience.

“The Sistine Chapel in VR” is an interactive tour of one of the world’s most famous sights, made possible through the latest reconstruction techniques and 3D remodeling of the Sistine Chapel on a CGI model in 360 from very high resolution photos.

Sky was among the finalists along with other products from around the world, featured in three categories: Sky Marathon Viewing, in The UX Award category, and Raphael - The Prince of the Arts in the UHD Iniative of the Year category, dedicated to ultra-definition initiatives that have made the 4K viewing experience even more innovative in the past year, with experimentation conducted at higher levels and of increasing emotional impact.

The experience begins at the entrance to the Chapel. From here the user, through an interactive path, can choose what to explore including the admirable vault frescoed by Michelangelo, levitating in the air 20 meters in the air to come face to face with the Creation of Adam, and the altar wall where the imposing Last Judgment towers above, with the unique possibility of observing its details and particulars just a few centimeters away from the Christ the Judge. The experience is accompanied by the narrator’s voice quoting passages from the sacred scriptures.

A unique, surprising and highly emotional experience realized in one of the most famous and visited places in the world through an unprecedented encounter between millenary art and contemporary technology.
