The Domus del Centurione nominated for the prestigious international award honoring the year's greatest archaeological discovery: it could be the first Italian site to win it

The Domus del Centurione, discovered during excavations for Rome’s Amba Aradam metro C station, is one of five archaeological discoveries nominated for theInternational Archaeological Discovery Award "Khaled al-Asaad." The award in question is named after Khaled al-Asaad, the archaeologist at the Palmyra archaeological site who lost his life in 2015 because he refused to point out the locations where important Roman artifacts were hidden before the city’s occupation byIsis.

Now in its fourth year, the International Archaeological Discovery Award “Khaled al-Asaad” honors the archaeological discovery deemed most important each year.

The other archaeological discoveries made in 2017 vying for this year’s award are the Hellenistic gymnasium found in Al Fayoum(Egypt), the Little Pompeii in Vienne(France), the oldest port of a Sumerian city in Abu Tbeirah(Iraq) and a sunken Roman city in the Gulf of Hammamet(Turkey). The awards will be presented on Nov. 16 at the XXI BMTA in Paestum, in the presence of Fayrouz, daughter of Khaled al-Asaad. In past editions, the award had gone to Katerina Peristeri for the Tomb of Amphipolis in Greece (2015), to INRAP - Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques Préventives, for the discovery of the Celtic tomb of Lavau in France (2016) and to Peter Pfälzner for the discovery of the village of Bassetki in Iraq (2017).
