Tomb of the Athlete found intact in Rome

Discovered at Case Rosse in Rome, the Tomb of the Athlete: it has remained remarkably intact.

A new and exceptional archaeological discovery has taken place in Rome, in the Case Rosse locality: it is the Tomb of the Athlete dating from the early Republican age, around the fourth century B.C.

The tomb found was named the Athlete’s Tomb because there are two strigils, or tools that were used by athletes, after their physical activity, to cleanse their bodies of fat and sweat.

Everything remained virtually intact: the skeletons of three men and one woman, the grave goods including food offerings, pottery and a bronze alloy coin that features Minerva’s head and the inscription “Roman” on the reverse.
