Two new acquisitions for the Uffizi: drawings by Giovanfrancesco Rustici and Giovanni Catesi

Two new drawings purchased last January have arrived at the Uffizi Galleries: works by Giovanfrancesco Rustici and Giovanni Catesi.

Coming directly from New York are two drawings that the Uffizi Galleries purchased at auction from Christie’s on January 30, 2018.

Uffizi Director Eike Schmidt said about them, “The two sheets return to Florence where they were created; they enrich the Uffizi collections in a remarkable way.”

The two new acquisitions are a very rare pen study made by Giovanfrancesco Rustici and the only known drawing by Florentine goldsmith and sculptor Giovanni Catesi.

The former features a female figure with a child on the recto and a beggar on the verso; the latter drawing features a study for two male figures on the recto and studies for an ornamental leaf motif and a figure holding a book on the verso.

The Catesi drawing, as Schmidt says, comes from the Florentine collection of Luigi Bartolini and was first published by Miles Chappell in 2000: it is another example of the international importance of Florentine goldsmithing.

Pictured is the drawing by Giovanfrancesco Rustici.
