Vitruvian Man can go to France: the Veneto Regional Administrative Court rejects Italia Nostra's appeal

The Veneto Regional Administrative Court rejects Italia Nostra's appeal against the loan of Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man to the Louvre: the work can go to France.

The long-awaited verdict of the Veneto Regional Administrative Court on the Vitruvian Man issue has arrived: as is well known, Italia Nostra had filed an appeal against the loan to the Louvre of Leonardo da Vinci ’s drawing kept at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, and the Veneto Regional Administrative Court had suspended the loan itself pending its ruling (the ruling was expected today, Wednesday, October 16).

In the end, the second section of the Veneto Regional Administrative Court decided to dismiss the appeal filed by Italia Nostra: “it does not present sufficient grounds,” ruled the administrative court, according to which there do not appear to be any administrative flaws in the procedures.

It says in the act that "the Administration allowed the loan by emphasizing, in support of the choice, the exceptional global relevance of the exhibition, the country’s aspiration to maximize the potential of its heritage, the value of collaboration and exchange between states expressed in the Memorandum, as well as the return of image and recognition, including identity, of the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice as a repository of Leonardo’s works, the implementation of cultural and museum relations between the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice and the Louvre Museum, as well as the advantage achieved by virtue of the loan for exchange with works by Raphael Sanzio destined for an exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale, which are difficult to enjoy in the national territory."

Commented Minister Dario Franceschini with satisfaction, “the Veneto Regional Administrative Court rejects the appeal and declares MiBACT’s work fully legitimate. Now the great Italian-French cultural operation of the two exhibitions on Leonardo in Paris and Raphael in Rome can start.” Italia Nostra is now left with the option of an appeal to the Council of State.
