Ten shots of Lisetta Carmi taken in Sardinia enter MAN's collections

Ten photographs by Lisetta Carmi taken in Sardinia join the collections of MAN in Nuoro.

The MAN Museum in Nuoro will acquire into its collections ten photographs by Lisetta Carmi (Genoa, 1924) taken in Sardinia.

The photographic works are currently on display at the same exhibition venue until June 20, 2021, on the occasion of Lisetta Carmi. Cheerful Voices in the Dark. Photographs in Sardinia 1962-1976, curated by Luigi Fassi and Giovanni Battista Martini, curator of the photographer’s Archive.

Luigi Fassi, director of the MAN Museum in Nuoro, announced the important donation with these words, "Contextually with the reopening of Lisetta Carmi’s solo exhibition Voci allegre nel buio. Photographs in Sardinia 1962-1976, which took place a few weeks ago and which is enjoying so much success with the public these days, we are happy to announce the donation of ten photographs on display to MAN’s permanent collection by the artist and the Archives. These are ten photographs taken by Lisetta Carmi in Sardinia, from Gallura to Barbagia, covering the entire time span of her frequentations of the island and constituting a precious heritage of enrichment of the museum’s collection, while carrying forward a precise direction of the latter’s growth. From the artistic productions of the Sardinian twentieth century to the reflections of the most contemporary artists, MAN’s collection has taken on the character of a multiform archive on the Mediterranean, whose complexity, transformations and future scenarios it recounts through the interpretative medium of the language of art. The ten photographs by Lisetta Carmi are in this sense a legacy for future generations of museum visitors, who will have at their disposal an important segment of the work of one of the most important voices of Italian and European photography of our time."

The exhibition presents a previously unpublished chapter of Lisetta Carmi’s photography, the one dedicated to Sardinia, bringing together hundreds of black-and-white shots taken between 1962 and 1976 during numerous stays on the island. Of all these, ten have been donated to MAN’s permanent collection by the artist and the archive.
