After being restored and displayed at the Strada Nuova Museums in Genoa as part of the exhibition Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari Restored. Unpublished Paintings and Drawings Around the San Nicolosio Altarpiece, Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari ’s altarpiece depicting St. Francis Presents to Christ and the Virgin the Patron Saints Louis IX King of France and Elizabeth Queen of Portugal returns to its original location on the high altar of the Church of San Nicolosio in the Ligurian capital.
Datable to 1637, the painting has been restored to full legibility thanks to a thorough restoration supported by several contributions, including that of the Passadore Foundation. The intervention made it possible to recover the original chromatic brilliance and luminosity of the work, enhancing once again its expressive power and pictorial quality.
The altarpiece had been moved to the Church of San Nicolosio in 1804 by the Franciscan Third Order, following the demolition of the Oratory dedicated to Saints Louis IX of France and Elizabeth of Portugal, located under the Church of San Francesco di Castelletto. The latter was also demolished in the same period due to the Napoleonic suppressions, which led to the loss of numerous religious buildings and works of art in the Genoese territory.
The return of the painting to the church is scheduled for Thursday, May 14 at 4:30 pm. Cultural Councillor Giacomo Montanari, restorer Antonio Silvestri and Grazia Di Natale, coordinator of the Diocese’s Office for Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage and Worship Buildings, will speak at the relocation.
“The return of Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari’s altarpiece to the Church of San Nicolosio represents a moment of great value for the city and for Genoa’s cultural heritage,” commented Councillor Montanari. “Returning this work to its original location means giving back to the community an important piece of its historical, artistic and spiritual memory. This restoration is the result of a virtuous collaboration between institutions, ecclesiastical realities and private supporters, demonstrating how art protection can become a shared and participatory project. Special thanks to Fondazione Passadore for the restoration of the painting and to Fondazione il Secolo XIX for the partnership in the exhibition at the Strada Nuova Museums, which was attended by more than 20 thousand visitors.”
