On Thursday, June 19, at 5 p.m., a new tour itinerary entitled At the Crossroads of Past and Present of the Urbs Salvia Archaeological Park in Urbisaglia, in the province of Macerata, will be inaugurated, involving the neighborhoods of the paved roads, which will be open to the public for the first time.
Thanks to the research, conducted jointly by Sofia Cingolani, director of the Park and archaeological officer at the Ducal Palace in Urbino - Regional Directorate of National Museums of the Marche, and Roberto Perna, professor of classical archaeology at the University of Macerata and director of the Unimc archaeological mission, active in Urbs Salvia since 1995, it has been possible to clarify new aspects of the urban organization of the city and the building phases of the buildings adjacent to the temple-cryptoporticus complex that make up the neighborhoods to the south - east of the complex itself, as well as the life and history of Urbs Salvia.
The completion of the excavation, the restoration of the structures and a thorough archaeological cleaning of the area allowed the design of a tour route, designed to accompany visitors to discover a new sector of the Roman settlement.
“The initiative,” says Luigi Gallo, Director of Palazzo Ducale di Urbino - Direzione Regionale Musei Nazionali delle Marche, “was born out of the collaboration between Palazzo Ducale di Urbino - Direzione Regionale Musei Nazionali delle Marche and the University of Macerata, which, thanks also to a grant from the General Directorate of Museums of the Ministry of Culture, has been able to continue the archaeological investigations in some of the rooms adjacent to the paved streets to the south - east of the Temple - Cryptoporticus complex, in the heart of the Roman colony.”
“This intervention,” says Sofia Cingolani, “represents a fundamental step in the restitution to public use of a hitherto unpublished urban sector, which allows us to grasp with greater clarity the complexity and vitality of the ancient city.”
“Thanks to the continuation of the investigations, it has been possible not only to reconstruct the construction phases of this part of the city, but also to read more accurately the relationships between the buildings and the road infrastructure, key elements for understanding the form, function and evolution of the urban space of the colony,” Roberto Perna added.
The inauguration of the new route, in the presence of director Luigi Gallo and those who have contributed to the realization of the project, will also be an opportunity to share the results of both completed and ongoing research in the same area, aimed at progressively expanding the visitor routes.
