Sky Arte brings *Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers*, the major exhibition from the National Gallery, to TV

David Bickerstaff’s documentary film, *Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers*, chronicles the most intense period of the Dutch painter’s life through the major exhibition that the National Gallery in London dedicated to him between 2024 and 2025 to mark the museum’s bicentennial.

Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers, the film directed by David Bickerstaff that brings to the screen the major exhibition dedicated to Vincent van Gogh held at the National Gallery in London between September 2024 and January 2025, will air on Sky Arte on June 18. It will air at 6:00 a.m. and 9:15 p.m. and will also be available for streaming on NOW and on demand.

The documentary film offers viewers the opportunity to take a virtual tour of the exhibition, which was a resounding success and one of the most significant events in the celebrations marking the bicentennial of the famous British museum. Produced as part of the Exhibition on Screen project and directed by Phil Grabsky—who also co-wrote the screenplay with the director—the film offers an original interpretation of Van Gogh’s work, focusing on the artist’s relationship with poetry, love, and creative exploration. Through an intimate journey through his brushstrokes, the documentary explores the painter’s innovative style, his revolutionary use of color, and the extraordinary emotional intensity that characterizes his work.

The narrative also delves into the reasons that led Van Gogh to move to the South of France, a decision that would profoundly shape his personal and artistic journey. In Arles and later in Saint-Rémy, the artist created some of the most famous works in the history of art. The documentary aims to portray an artist driven by profound intelligence and an extraordinary passion for painting. It also addresses the issue of his mental health, recalling his hospitalization at the Hôtel-Dieu in Arles, a place immortalized in some of his best-known works.

The exhibition brought together some of Van Gogh’s most beloved masterpieces, including *Starry Night over the Rh ône * (1888), The Yellow House (1888), Sunflowers (1888), and Van Gogh’s Chair (1889), alongside rarely exhibited paintings and a significant selection of drawings.
